After the anticipation of the surf forecast with the possibility of NE winds and the all occuring on a weekend it all seemed too good to be true, then I caught a glimpse of the perfect sets rolling in from the approach road. It was just before low tide and the sea was littered with surfers also taking advantage of the conditions but they were fighting with the gusty winds.

I went for the 5.4 and rigged at a leisurely pace as it was too crowded with the surfers and the sea was still out beyond the funnelling effect of the NE wind, besides, it was going to get better on the tidal push.

Ventured out in a winter suit (having just got back from Tiree) but it was way too warm. Chose to launch as far upwind in the river as possible which paid off on the first run in catching one of the more moderate head high waves and scoring 4 bottom turns. This set the pattern for the next couple of hours as the key to catching the waves was timing. I was a bit hit and miss but with each wave caught I was pushing the envelope. Came a cropper a few times with very late cut backs and twisted my ankle when I got nailed as the wave broke as I top turned (stuck in the strap).

The crunch came as I was wobbling out and got rinsed by one of the bigger sets. Surfaced to find everything the wrong way round and the mast pointing down with the next wave powering in. The mast (Tush RDM 100%) snapped at the ferrule and the main panel in the sail was destroyed. One long swim in. Looking at the conditions I decided to rig the 4.7 but stick with the big board. Stayed out until I couldn't hold on anymore but it was a struggle with the smaller sail.

What more can you say, a perfect day at Bigbury.
